As I was planning how to ask Feyi to spend forever with me, I knew I wanted the moment to be memorable. We already had plans to get married, but I still wanted her to experience the excitement, surprise, and romance of a proposal she would remember.
Planning the proposal didn’t come easy to me. If I’m honest, nothing about it was easy, the ring, the venue, and figuring out what I actually wanted to say when the moment came.
The planning really started once I bought the ring, exactly five weeks and four days before the proposal. That actually wasn’t as straightforward as I expected. I spent so much time trying to pick the right design and get her ring size right. Thankfully, she’d dropped enough hints over time to point me in the right direction.
Once I had the ring, my focus shifted to the proposal itself. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I wanted to do it, and I knew from the start that I wanted a waterfront setting, that was the one thing I was certain about. There’s something about being by the water that I’ve always found peaceful, and I knew Feyi would appreciate that kind of atmosphere too. Eventually, I decided on a restaurant that fit exactly what I had pictured.
Nothing about planning this was easy, but if there was one easy part, it was deciding it would happen on a date night. I called the restaurant ahead of time to let them know what I had planned, arranged for a cake to be brought out as part of the proposal, and told them the signal I’d give when it was time. Apart from that, I left everything in their hands. I had no idea there’d be an MC there that evening, but he ended up adding something extra to the experience. He asked for our names and took it from there.
More than anything, I wanted Feyi to enjoy the experience. My biggest fear was that she might feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable, but deep down I had a feeling everything would work out just fine.
By the time we arrived at the restaurant and sat down, it finally hit me that this was actually happening. I didn’t rehearse what I was going to say because I knew if I tried to memorise it, I’d probably forget it in the moment. I just trusted the right words would come anyway.
When everything started, I looked over at Feyi and honestly had no idea what she was thinking. Then she wrapped her arms around me and whispered, “Oh my God… why do this to me?” It was funny and so genuinely her. It made the moment even more special. Then I got down on one knee and asked.
She didn’t hesitate. She smiled, looked at me, and said, “Yes.”
The second she said yes, none of the worrying mattered anymore.
We sealed the moment with a kiss, and it remains my favourite memory of the entire day.
I’m proudest not just of pulling off the proposal, but of seeing how happy she was. It went well beyond anything I expected. Even though she normally wouldn’t have chosen a public proposal, she embraced every second of it, and that meant the world to me.
