proposal story

I’ll be the first to admit, I knew it was coming! It feels like we’d been talking about getting married for our entire relationship, so I knew he had something up his sleeve during my trip. In fact, I even wore a white dress that night because I was pretty sure it was the night.

What I didn’t see coming was how he was going to do it.
Anyone who knows me knows I’m allergic to attention. “All eyes on me” is basically my worst nightmare. And Lanre is pretty reserved too, so a public proposal was the last thing I expected.

As we walked into the restaurant, I kept thinking, I’m pretty sure he’s proposing tonight, but definitely not here. I convinced myself it would happen after dinner somewhere a little more private.

We got to our table, and Lanre stepped away for a few minutes. I was still in denial and genuinely thought he had something completely unrelated to take care of. Looking back, I’m sure he was just putting the final touches in place.

When he came back, we chatted for a bit, I tried to act normal, and then Ed Sheeran started playing. That was it.

The second he turned toward me, I completely lost it. I practically folded into him and just kept saying, “Oh my God! Oh my God!! I can’t believe this is happening!!! I can’t believe you’re doing this to me!!!!”

As much as the idea of a public proposal would normally have terrified me, in that moment none of it mattered. All I could see was the love, the thought, and the effort he’d put into making the moment so special.
The next few minutes are honestly a blur. He got down on one knee, I said yes, we embraced, and before I knew it, we were celebrating one of the happiest moments of our lives.
Now I get to marry the sweetest, kindest, most thoughtful, and most patient man I know.

P.S. Surprise and shock aside, he really couldn’t have picked a more perfect spot. I’ll take a rooftop with a waterfront view over just about anywhere, and once I started breathing again, it was the perfect place for us to soak it all in and enjoy the rest of our evening.
